Introduction
Despite the potential of digital skills to enhance learning and professional development, women and girls continue to lag in digital skills education. The global gender gap in digital skills is widening, even after more than ten years of concerted national and international efforts to address this issue. As technology evolves rapidly, the tech sector presents numerous opportunities for individuals seeking fulfilling and financially rewarding careers. However, an examination of the industry reveals a persistent gender imbalance within the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), indicating that significant barriers still exist that prevent women from entering and remaining in these sectors. Key factors contributing to the substantial gender digital divide include the high costs associated with tech education, a lack of awareness regarding available opportunities, insufficient female mentorship in the tech industry, a dearth of relevant and empowering content for women, and prevailing gender biases and stereotypes. Addressing the gender gap in the tech sector necessitates a multifaceted approach.
The Centre for Women Empowerment in Technology (CWE-TECH) has initiated a series of webinars designed to foster interest and awareness regarding the career opportunities available in the tech industry. These webinars also aim to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the gender-related challenges faced by girls and women aspiring to enter tech careers. The focus will be on rural girls in Kenya, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, who are often the least likely to access opportunities in the tech field.
Objectives of the Webinars
1. To enhance collective understanding of the current experiences and participation of rural girls in the tech ecosystem.
2. To introduce participants to potential career paths and opportunities within the tech industry, while creating a supportive platform for the girls and young women
This webinar is to set the climate for coding classes that girls will begin in 2025
