No Room For Chances! My Cycle With Me.

MOHCAM's Menstrual Beads is a Prevention mechanism to curb teenage pregnancies in schools and rural communities. The beads are designed in three colors to help adolescent girls identify the safe and unsafe periods during their menstrual cycle. The red color signifies blood, the black signifies the unsafe period and the white signifies the safe period during menstruation.Girls are trained on how to produce their beads and also they also educate other girls. These Beads are aimed at reducing adolescent pregnancy, ending child marriage, keeping girl's at school and empowering girls to make informed choices about their health and lives.\"Let girls be girls\"

When girl's can calculate their menstrual cycle, girls will be able to finish school, find decent work and fulfill their potential.Girls are sexually very active and Parents often fail to discuss sexuality and health with their children. Many young girls find themselves in difficult situations because of the lack of information and psycho-social support they need during menstruation. All adolescent girls should be able to manage their menstruation hygienically with safety,in privacy and with dignity.

Adolescent pregnancy, unwanted child bearing are growing public health concerns in Cameroon. Adolescence constitutes a period of rapid growth, both physical and emotional. It encompasses young people aged 10 to 19 years. Adolescent pregnancy is considered as high risk and is associated with high rates of obstetric and psychological complications.

Adolescent pregnancy is pregnancy in a female under the age of 20. This has serious consequences on mothers, children, families and communities. Mothers and children grow up with high risk of poor health, less education, and poor economic outcomes.Having a child during her teenage years limits girls' opportunities for better education, jobs, and income. Girl's are the Sustainable Development Goals generation.Goal 3,4 and 5 shall be achieved with their menstrual beads and it will ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all girls.

Pregnancy is more likely to be unintended during the teenage years, and births are more likely to be premature and are associated with greater risks of complications during delivery and of death.Worldwide, one in five girls has given birth by the age of 18.Infants of adolescent mothers are also more likely to have low birth weight, which can have a long-term impact on their health and development.

Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death among girls aged 15-19 years.Having children at a young age is risky in Cameroon. Girls aged 15 to 19 who give birth are at higher risk of dying due to their pregnancy, and also are at higher risk of infant or child mortality. Adolescent fertility rate is high affecting not only young women and their children’s health but also their long-term education and employment prospects.Births to women aged 15–19 years old have the highest risk of infant and child mortality as well as a higher risk of morbidity and mortality for the young mother.Adolescent pregnancy rates are staggeringly high according to the World Bank report of April 2011.

For many adolescent girls in Cameroon who survive their pregnancies, life becomes very challenging. These challenges are exacerbated among \"marginalized girls most especially girls living with disability. In advancing Goal 4 of the SDG's,the menstrual beads will ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and will promote lifelong learning opportunities for all girls. When adolescent girls are empowered, when they know about their rights, they are educated about their bodies and are given the tools to succeed, they become agents of positive change in their communities\".UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin.

Menstrual Beads helps adolescent girls to develop a strong sense of consciousness, builds their self esteem, improves their health, increase their economic assets, and provides the protection they need to thrive among challenges.
