Dear Friends,

One of my favorite times of the year is when we work on selecting our annual Courage in Journalism awardees. I am constantly inspired and in awe of the stories of courage that are brought to our attention through our global nomination process. It is a distinct honor to celebrate women journalists who set themselves apart by their extraordinary bravery.

Today, I am writing to ask you to help us identify the courageous women journalists pursuing the stories of our time. Please consider nominating the inspiring reporters you have worked with in the past year, or help us spread the word about this opportunity for journalists by sharing this email with your friends and colleagues.

ABOUT THE 2016 COURAGE IN JOURNALISM AWARDS

Since 1990, the Courage in Journalism Awards recognize women journalists who have demonstrated extraordinary strength of character in pursuing their profession under difficult or dangerous circumstances such as government oppression, threats to personal safety, and other intimidating obstacles.

We also recognize the pioneers who kicked down barriers to make it possible for women all over the world to find their voices and make them heard. Lifetime Achievement Award winners persevered, opening doors for future generations to make a difference.

Last year we expanded the scope of our Courage Awards by establishing the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award to honor the exemplary career of Pulitzer Prize-winning AP photographer, Anja Niedringhaus. Niedringhaus was recognized with the 2005 Courage in Journalism Award. Nominations for the 2016 Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award must be submitted by Friday, February 26. The winner of the 2016 Courage in Photojournalism Award will be honored with a $20,000 prize at an event in Washington, D.C. in June.

The deadline to nominate journalists for the 2016 Courage Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award is Friday, March 11. Please note that the original deadline for Courage was February 26. The Courage Award includes an average cash prize of $15,000.Winners will be honored at our annual award ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York in October.

Courage in Journalism Award nominees must be staff or freelance women reporters, writers, editors, photographers, or producers working in any country. Lifetime Achievement Award candidates can be either working or retired journalists.
