2.0 : Our Power Is In The Web

The new frontier of the www, Web 2.0, is the fastest growing innovation that is continuously exposing me to different spheres and new forms of interactive experiences. As I interact with the evolving and dynamic nature of Web 2.0, I have learnt that I cannot know what to expect tomorrow. This element of surprise creates feelings of eager excitement as I wake up every day to a new world of rich and thrilling experiences.

Web 2.0 is a digital platform that challenges physical borders and boundaries. Today, instantaneous communications and real time dissemination of information is transforming the world into a smaller, flatter and faster one. Through video, audio and other interactive digital tools, I can now create virtual presences and proximities to connect with the rest of the world like never before. When I can bridge the distance of space and the gap of time with such ease of manner, it is the beginning of personal power to change the world.

This second generation web has been significantly transformed from the traditional one-way www where I could only be a passive participant. Whereas before, web content was created by select professionals, the content of Web 2.0 is now primarily dependent on the creation, contribution and collaboration of common users like me who can use the read/write tools and capabilities of today’s www.A user-driven web which allows for two-way interaction can offer to me the individual power of unparalleled learning opportunities and unlimited intellectual creativity.

Web 2.0 allows me to easily find like-minded peers who share the same talents, passions, interests and pursuits. I can also connect with others who are entirely opposite-minded of me. Through interacting, communicating, sharing, collaborating and exchanging information, I am exposed to thoughts, actions, sights and sounds which I was never aware of before. By joining online communities and social networks, I can feel group empowerment as I am brought closer to others in order to share and celebrate our solidarity.

With the revolutionary way that worldwide interconnectedness and interaction is widening, deepening and speeding up, I cannot even begin to imagine the solutions that Web 2.0 can bring to the global women’s empowerment movement. This is because there will be limitless, seamless and timeless possibilities and opportunities to be created, founded and utilised by women via Web 2.0.

The first step to take is to allow and educate all women to use the technological tools of Web 2.0. By doing so, we are lending them a voice in order that they can share with others their stories and tell of the risks, realities and rewards of their powerful journeys. When every woman starts to have her own voice, immense power has shifted into the hands of any woman all over the world.
