How I Became A Single Mother!!!

I’m a single mother of three children, born to a polygamous family of three step mothers and 18 children who went to school but never attained the university degree due to family problems and lack of tuition.

It was May 2008 prior to the birth of my third child when my husband was imprisoned due to drug abuse. I knew about it because we use to have misunderstandings over that issue but he always denied it. While in prison, he was so ashamed when he saw me, as he never wanted me to know, I had brought him something to eat and to tell him that “do you see, I always told you”.

After prison, I sat him down and talked to him over the issue of drug abuse which sparked off a quarrel and the next day he left for his home village.

I tried to call him during the hard time of labor but all was in vain, I asked him the education for the children, but his response was “I’m I the school?\" I called him about the children’s medical care and his response was \"I’m I the hospital?” I tried several times but all in vain. I decided to forget about him hence becoming a single mother up to today.

Thou the brick laying project is profitable, it takes time due to the process of brick laying. Especially to me who is doing all the work by myself as there is no money to pay for labour charges! However due to it’s long process one can’t rely on it for day today basic needs and thus has to have another source of income and so I do move door to door looking for those who need help in laundry work at a fee which I use for the day today life fundamentals.

As a single mother, I have gone through many difficulties, as such as-having a sick child at the same time going to work. I have to attend to my child, as at the same time work is waiting for me, because if I don’t work then no food for that day.etc And it is through these problems that I decided to form a single mothers Association such that single mothers come together and see how to share and handle their problems as a group.
