ANOTHER WAY TO EMPOWER GRASSROOTS WOMEN

\"She sent for me and asked me to bring up a popular project that will integrate women in the state. And I came up with U-R Mutual Women Revolving Aid, a masterpiece to grassroots empowerment. U-R stands for Urban-Rural women. It was designed to coordinate urban women volunteers who must be educated and skilled in any profession or vocation. The scheme is to identify rural communities and settlements near a particular urban area as catchment areas for that urban area. The volunteers are to work part-time after they are given further training. They shall go into the rural settlement and each make one or two friends among the rural women to socialize with in order to give them exposure to good life, informal and vocational education, personal hygiene, peace, and conflict resolution. On the other hand, they are to help in organizing women’s cooperative groups according to the economic opportunities of the rural community, where they – urban women – must become financial members. The urban volunteers have paperwork to do frequently by reporting through an evaluation system to a secretariat where reports are to be processed and analyzed. Volunteers shall only be entitled to monthly stipends as transportation allowances to fields of assignment and a performance-based quarterly grant for gifts and friendship cement with the rural friends. The scheme was meant to be a tool for policy impact assessment and need assessment. - an excerpt.
