assignment 1

My name is Alejandra Velez. I am 30 years and I am originally from Mexico City. I currently live in China, I am an English teacher. I lived in the U.S for ten years. I think that Web 2.0 has been very important in my life it has helped me keep in touch with my loved ones and also to discover new places and new opportunities. What excites me more about web 2.0 is exactly that it gives us the opportunity to communicate and be informed no matter where we are in the world. Well except of course if you live in china and you don't have access to a VPN or a proxy server. The internet like every other source of information is censored and controlled by the Chinese government, but that is a good topic for a different assignment.
In my opinion anything that allows women to express themselves empowers us, but most importantly we are empowered when someone is actually listening and taking the time to understand where we are coming from and see that whatever it is that we are trying to express has a purpose. That in my opinion is the solution that Web 2.0 brings it gives us hope that someone might actually listen to what we have to say, in most cases its more than just hope, someone is actually listening.
This tools are empowering me by allowing me to continue living my life without having to sacrifice friendships or the relationships with my family members. This is very important because there are times when being in a different country gets lonely and its good to be able to just open up the computer and get on Facebook and chat your worries away with the people that love you. In my case, I am discriminated by the parents of the kids I teach and by some of my coworkers for being a Mexican girl teaching English and when times get though at work the only way that I can find the strength to keep fighting stereotypes and ignorance is by letting it all out on my blog.
