Being apart of something bigger than myself.

I'm have come to the realization that I'm not the type who wants to the join the corporate world nor climb the corporate latter. While I spent the last several years pursuing my degree (slacking off at times) to be able to get that corporate job, however I won't knock those who choose this path.

I've always wanted to do something where I'd would be involved in making a difference in someone's life. My personal vision for my community and life is to contribute to society in a positive way. My vision for the world is to contribute to alleviating the oppression of marginalized people. Living in a society where women are still blamed for being raped, this often prevents them from reporting the crimes against them. It is true when feminists say we live in what's called \"rape culture.\" Where sexual violence against women is dismissed, blamed on the woman or even encouraged. Due to living in such a culture, marches such as Take Back the Night and the recent controversial Slut Walks have taken place.

I do volunteer work in my local community, by helping victims of sexual assault report their attacks. When I'm with them, it helps them feel safe and they know there are people there to support them whenever they need help. Reporting an assault is one of the most difficult things they must face, but they are brave for choosing to report them as it's something that takes a great deal of courage.

This is a way for me to give back to my community, as for the world, it's something much bigger. There were times when I felt I wasn't sure I'd be able to contribute on a global scale and felt the world's problems were much too big to really do anything about. But in the end, this view isn't true, yes things are difficult, but it doesn't mean I can't make a difference in someone's life. It's inspiring to see women around the world who are fighting for their rights, one example would be the Women 2 Drive campaign that's taking place in Saudi Arabia right now.

Being a Voices of our Future Corespondent is just the first step in the journey of me achieving my vision for the future. I have some experience in journalism, but not on a global scale. My main passion is raising awareness about oppression. But I don't want to speak for those who don't have a voice, because only they know their experiences better than those of us on the outside. I want to be apart of something that allows for them to have their own voices. Being a member of World Pulse has made me see that it's not about me, because I'm apart of a much larger community of people who want to raise their voices.
