CELEBRATING WOMEN'S DAY IN THE ISLANDS IN LAKE VICTORIA-UGANDA

kalangala District Local Government in conjunction with civil society organisations led by Action Aid and KADINGO an umbrella organisation for all civil societies organised women's day that had taken five years without being celebrated in the district.
We had different pre-event activities but due to limited dtime and resources, we accomplished 2 events.

In order to align ourselves to this year's theme: connecting girls ,inspiring futures, we went and carried out school dialogues
in 4 schools. The results were amazing .They were presented by 4 girls at the occasion. The results are contained on a recorded disc.
The second activity was to select 10 women change makers in four fields: education, justice, service delivery and leadership
to be awarded for the promotion of girls and women in this remote islands.
It was a difficult process as there had never been such an award activity in the area.
Interestingly, one name came out prominently though the person referred to had died three years back! That name islate MOLLY MULAAZA who organised HIV/AIDS positive women in a forum that helped them access treatment and other related resources, The wider community came to know about positives through this woman.

In each category, 2 women were selected for the award. Also awards were given to three girls who were best in National Primary, Ordinary and Advanced examinations.
On the 8.03.2012 , girls from schools presented their issues to the politicians, technical people present.
The selected women were also invited to present inspiring speeches .
Finally Awards were given out. It was a ceremony to be remembered for along time.
