The UN Security Council will hold an important session on Sudan next Thursday, to discuss all developments in the Sudanese crisis due to the war, including the humanitarian crisis.
The upcoming session of the Council will be at the level of foreign ministers and will be chaired by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, whose country chairs the Council for the current month of December.
The session will be attended by the Permanent Mission of Sudan to the United Nations, which is expected to present its interventions during the session on the files that will be discussed.
The US Secretary of State's chairing of the session comes in the context of the US Democratic administration's attempts to achieve a breakthrough in the Sudan file before its members leave their positions in about a month from now.
It is worth noting that the US Congress had approved a proposal to appoint a special presidential envoy to Sudan for a period of two years, succeeding the current envoy Tom Perriello, who was appointed in February of this year.
According to Resolution (7204) adopted by the US Congress, the new special envoy will be appointed by the president-elect based on the advice and approval of the Senate, provided that he begins no later than 90 days from the issuance of the resolution.
