Connecting freely

We all want to connect. No matter our culture or what our story, it’s universal and it’s part of our deepest natures. Connection gives meaning to our lives.

In this online community PulseWire, I’ve found an outer platform that matched my inward desire to feel connected. We are all shifting toward a new way of living and it has everything to do with connection- I’d even say it’s exactly why we are living in these times- that we are here to make a great evolutionary jump to a world based on the oneness of all things, to a more connected, compassionate and unified world.

The internet is one of our greatest tools in the building of this world. It is the spider web that connected Subhadra and I.

We met here on PulseWire- me a mother and writer from the U.S., and she an activist and researcher in women’s rights in India. I responded to a post she had written about the barriers that pregnant women in India face. I’d heard lots of stories about the state of maternal health, as I was passionate about childbirth and was researching and learning more about maternal mortality. But there was something that prompted me to respond to Subhadra’s post in particular. She emailed me on a synchronistic day in which I had a thought, a thought that became an idea, an idea that holds potential for much more. I wondered if I could form a group of women from my community to sponsor a “sister-city/village,” to empower women of another city to create change in their community, and to improve reproductive and maternal health. Turns out, Subhadra facilitates reproductive health camps in remote villages. She’d like to extend her work to the women in the slums of the city of Indore. We are corresponding and will collaborate on how the women in two cities, Jacksonville and Indore, might become connected.

All this made possible because of our freedom, inner and outer. I have the freedom to access the internet, to utilize it in my own creative ways to learn and grow and share my voice and connect. While some women work toward having these freedoms, risking their own personal safety, my risk lies in my own vulnerability, of being willing to speak truly and authentically without fear. Of being able to tell Subhadra- I want to help, though it’s easy to think there is nothing I can do; of being able to tell my community- let’s do something we’ve never done, follow me in this unknown journey. Maybe it is within this space of vulnerability that my connections will expand beyond my imaginings!

We accelerate the process of becoming who we are meant to be- a united and whole humanity- when everyone can freely connect.

In a time when freedom of expression and equal access to knowledge and ideas has become synonymous with access to the Internet, World Pulse is asking women worldwide: What does "Universal Internet Access and Digital Freedom" mean to YOU? This month, we invite you to raise your voice by writing about the everyday obstacles you face and risks you take in accessing the Internet, or how you have used it to change lives and bring about positive change in your community.
