My journey: From Struggle to Strength

My name is Namugalu Mariam, a 31-year-old Ugandan, l grew up in a home fractured by discord. I was raised primarily by my grandmother and father, l experienced the struggles of a broken family. Despite my evident intelligence and eagerness to learn, my opportunities were stifled. My family deemed me unworthy of  education, leading me to skip school frequently.

Life at home was fraught with domestic violence, a grim reality that l faced daily. Dropping out of school further fueled the hostility, turning home into a battleground. But amidst the chaos and pain, l held onto my dreams and the belief that l deserved better.

At a pivotal moment, l decided that l had endured enough. I left my abusive marriage, taking my two beautiful children with me, and began a new journey as a single mother. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life, first me enrolling back into school, fueled by determination and a deep desire for change.

My early struggles shaped me resolve to fight for others facing similar challenges. I began working with various charities and women's organizations, dedicating myself to helping women and children say no to domestic violence. My work brought me into contact with countless individuals who had endured similar pain, reinforcing my commitment to advocate for those without a voice

Statistics

In Uganda, domestic violence and issues arising from broken homes are significant concerns, affecting many individuals and families. According to a report by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) and UN Women, about 51% of ever-married women aged 15-49 have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner at some point in their lives (UN Women).

Additionally, a UNICEF report indicates that violence against children is widespread, with many children facing physical and emotional abuse within their homes. The report highlights that nearly 80% of children in Uganda experience some form of violence before the age of 18 (UNICEF).

These statistics reflect a broader trend of social challenges related to broken homes and domestic violence in Uganda, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention and support systems to protect vulnerable populations and address the root causes of these issues.

My involvement in these organizations gradually led me to the political arena. Drawn to the People Power movement, which later evolved into the National Unity Platform (NUP), l found a platform that resonated with my beliefs. I saw in the movement an opportunity to amplify my voice and advocate for the issues above close to my heart and others.

My  journey into politics was driven by my desire to end domestic violence and ensure that women and children in Uganda received the support and protection they needed. I campaigned tirelessly, using my own experiences to highlight the urgent need for change. My message was clear: in Uganda, women and children must be given priority, and domestic violence must be eradicated.Which took me too prison for days without food or water at a certain period in time.

Because in my country fighting or speaking about what is wrong is a crime.

As a political, human, and climate activist, My voice grew stronger within the NUP which am hoping to stand for the Lord women Councilor in 2026.I have used my platform to push for policies that addressed domestic violence, supported single mothers, and provided educational opportunities for all children. My advocacy extended to environmental issues, understanding that a healthy planet was essential for a thriving society.

Through my work, l inspired many, becoming a beacon of hope and resilience. I proved that even those from the most challenging backgrounds could rise and make a significant impact. My journey from a neglected child in a broken home to a powerful advocate for justice and equality demonstrated the strength of the human spirit.

My story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of fighting for what is right. My dedication to my children, my community, and my country continues to inspire those around me, showing that change is possible when driven by passion and purpose
