On November 18, 2024, Keturah Shammah, Executive Director of Girls Education Mission International (GEM), joined a distinguished panel featuring organizations like the World Standardization Organization, Harvard University, and the World Economic Forum. The panel discussion, part of the First Informal Webinar with Observers ahead of the Fifth Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) meeting in Busan, South Korea, focused on preparations for INC-5 and reflections from Observer groups on critical topics.

Keturah Shammah emphasized the need to include the voices of women and girls in addressing challenges related to microplastics, given their significant roles in household consumption and decision-making. Her advocacy highlighted how women and girls are uniquely impacted and can contribute to sustainable solutions.

Earlier in 2024, Ms. Shammah participated as a panelist in the INC-4 webinar and the in-person INC-4 sessions in Ottawa, Canada. These engagements reinforce GEM International’s commitment to ensuring women and girls’ perspectives are integral to global policy discussions on microplastics and sustainability.
