Honest, strong, solutions-based journalism is responsible leadership.

My voice is strong, unique, insistent, reasoned, insightful.

I want to be a correspondent because WorldPulse is a community where I feel that my voice is welcome, where my passion about women reporting (both reporting about women and reporting by women) is understood. The community challenges me to think even deeper about issues that surround our world, how they affect us and how we can change them- should we need to. Being a correspondent is an honour that gives back in more than status.

In late May, one of the Uganda national daily newspapers (there is only two, the Government has shares in the other) was closed because of a letter that was published. The letter addressed national issues and the government thought this was threatening national security. One of the things that this letter mentioned was a Presidential succession scheme, that would see the current president's son as our next President. The paper- for which I write- was ordered to hand over the letter and their sources and failure to do that, we were closed and lost business for about ten days. This reminded Ugandans about good, honest, strong journalism. Honest, strong, solutions-based journalism will help my community to address inequalities within as well as provide formerly-inaccessible information. Journalism gives members of the community an opportunity to talk back, to address their problems, to hold their leaders accountable. It gives them- the stakeholders- a platform to have a voice and bridges the information gap. How else does a nurse in the rural community get to hear about the President's son's quick rise in the army? Who will tell the people that their water will be taxed? All the people will see is higher bills. Who will alert them about maternal deaths? Honest, strong, solutions-based journalism is responsible leadership.
