On October 24 in Enugu State, history was made as the Enugu State governor, His Excellency, Barr. Peter Mbah ably represented by His Deputy, His Excellency, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai flagged-off the introduction of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine into it's routine immunization program.

Ruldin--Society for Neglected Women of Nigeria (RUL-SONWON) in collaboration with Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Ministry of Health, Enugu State and other partners say NO to Cervical Cancer with HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS VACCINATION

It is estimated that 7.7 million girls in Nigeria between the ages of 9 -14 years will receive a single dose of the HPV vaccine which is very effective in preventing infection with HPV types 16 &18, which causes about 70% of cervical cancer.

With the introduction of the vaccine, we have one less worry in the world. The vaccine is being provided for free by the Federal Ministry of Health through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency with support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, UNICEF, World Health Organization and other partners. The vaccine is free, safe and effective.

Parents were encouraged to take their children (girls aged 9-14 years) to the nearest health care centre to be vaccinated.
