In search of an improved and sustainable livelihood- A case study from West Bengal, India



Surtan Bibi , after completion of a 48 days long Basic Tailoring Training on 12.09.2018, organized by Gramin Vikas Trust, A National level Development Organization, working in 13 States in India, , with the support from WBSCL( West Bengal Swarogar /Self Employment Corporation limited/SHG-SE ( Self Help Group/Self Employment  Department, Government of West Bengal, India,  has started her journey towards sustainable livelihood through Tailoring. Surtain Bibi told “ I didn’t know the tailoring before going for the Tailoring Training, Through Muktidhara Training, I learnt vividly about the Tailoring through practical exposure to tailoring in the Tailoring classes. With the continuous support and encouragement from my Trainer and the staff of Gramin Vikas Trust and my own initiation, I had purchased a sewing machine during the Training period itself, learnt stitching of garments in a fruitful manner”.



“ At present I can stitch Blouse, petticoat, nity, frock etc and stitches some garments as per the seldom order I received from my native village, with an income of Rs.50/60 per day”.



“ From my earning , now I can mitigate the expenses for my kids education, and thus helping my Husband in a big way”.



“I could able to enhance my income in significant extend provided I get some advance training on Tailoring”.



Besides, I am planning to establish my own tailoring unit by taking rented shop on village main road for getting more order for Tailoring”.
