In Your Own Bubble

As I was seated in the metro (subway) on my way home, I was stucked by the number of people with headphones on listening to their MP3, iPod, iPhone, iTouch... Anyway, they were listening to music or something else. Nobody was smiling to nobody, few people talked to one another.

Then I thought to myself, where is the world going? Why people are cutting themselves from the rest of the world, by shutting themselves down with a simple pair of headphones. Is the world becoming more selfish and self-centered? Where are interpersonal relations going?

I don't own a MP3 or any portable musical device. The only electronic device I carry on me is my cellphone and it's such an old one that I don't have an integrated camera, there is no MP3, and I seldom text message people... I like seeing people and talking to them directly.

I also remember that young guy seating next to the metro door. There was an old lady with a cane that rushed in in the search of a seat. He didn't even notice her, thus he didn't get up and gave her his seat. Fortunately, someone saw her and gave up his seat.

People seldom smile to one another nowadays, there are either too busy thinking of themselves or stubbornly avoiding to have contacts with strangers, they sat their mind in an off-social mindset when they are outside of their normal "habitat", meaning their workplace or home or any other known-place/comfort zone.

What happened to the time where everyone has to rely on one another, where people weren't as preoccupied with themselves as now, where people actually talk to one another?

I can be the devil's advocate myself, but I won't do it. What is the purpose of finding excuses for such behaviour? It is often said that human beings are social animals... I'm starting to have a doubt...

We will see where this is going...
