Introducing Lady Bosses: Towards the economic emancipation of women through entrepreneurship

What is Lady Bosses?

Lady Bosses is a Women empowerment Initiative that presents for young women an exceptional opportunity to join and create a network of Women Entrepreneurs and Businesswomen in Zimbabwe. Its aim is to promote economic empowerment in line with the National Gender Policy that speaks togender justice, equality, integration, inclusiveness and shared responsibility for sustainable development in Zimbabwe. The same opportunity presents a chance for young women to be connected to mentors, access funding opportunities, gain visibility, grow their businesses and emancipate themselves to financial freedom.

What is the problem?

Available data shows that there are higher levels of unemployment among female youths in Zimbabwe despite there being more females than males in the population. It should be understood that men and women are confronted by the same challenges, however, women face additional challenges which range from lack of sufficient visibility, cultural appreciation, family commitments at the same time, women entrepreneurs are less experienced in handling external business contacts for innovation. Lack of skills is also prevalent in the informal sector where the majority of young people find themselves after school. Moreover, innovation challenges have frequently focused on male dominated high-tech industries, while it is widely acknowledged that traditional and service-related industries where women are more prominent may also be innovative. This makes it a challenge for them to get funding and finance for their businesses.

Why empower women?

Increasing the proportion of young women participating in income generating projects and employment will improve their incomes. This will result in social, health and economic benefits which range from delayed marriage, reduced rates of domestic violence, lower infant mortality to more healthy behavior and lowered Sexual and Reproductive risks. Empowering women and granting them equal rights in areas such as entrepreneurship and organisational leadership has undoubtedly progressive spill over effects on key development outcomes, such as pro-poor growth and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
