Introducing myself and my journal: Listen to My Voice

About Me:
¡Hola! My name is Rocio Ortega. I’m 19 years old and attend Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts with hopes to major in Political Science and/or History.
I am a proud Latina born from two Mexican-born parents who have taught me the value of hard work and education. These values have followed me to college as I am a member of Mezcla and Alianza, Latina organizations at Wellesley College to meet the political, social and academic needs of Latina students on campus.
My involvement with Girl Up has been very rewarding. In high school I founded a Girl Up club in 2010 that is still running strong! I served as a Teen Advisor from 2011-2012 and am now proud to be a Youth Champion.
Now that I’m in college, the need to spread the word about Girl Up is much more important. I’m blessed to have the opportunity of attending college. However, this might not be the case for 600 million adolescent girls living in developing countries. My hopes are to raise awareness for them through Girl Up and through the media as a Teen Reporter for Global Girl Media.
I am all about female empowerment and getting female representation in all professional fields whether it is in politics, the media or the military… I strongly believe we must all come together!

My Passions:
female empowerment

My Challenges:
inner city struggles

My Vision for the Future:
gender equality
