About Me:
The things I was ridiculed for growing up are the things people compliment me on now. My interests, my appearance, and my talents were once areas I felt embarrassed by. I haven't changed but times have. Athletic women are celebrated, intelligent women are no longer too intimidating, and short hair is considered chic. If I could go back in time and tell my 12 year old self not to worry about the ridicule because everything will come full circle, I would do it in a heartbeat. Instead, I've become a teacher and a coach for high school girls, and by empowering them to stay true to themselves, the message of courage in the face of adversity will get handed down. A legacy of strength is the greatest thing we can give to our daughters. As the mother of two young sons, I need to model for them the possibilities that exist for young women, how much better it's gotten, and how much work there still is to do. In that sense, my boys will become part of the solution instead of part of the problem. An avenue of appreciation is the greatest thing we can give our sons.
