Growing up in a community plagued by conflict and inequality, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of violence and the marginalization of girls. It was a constant struggle—both physical and emotional—for those of us who lived in fear of violence, and for the girls who were often told that their dreams were out of reach. But in the face of these challenges, something stirred inside me: a deep desire to change the narrative, not just for myself but for the girls around me.

I was fortunate to have a strong mother who, despite the odds, believed in the power of education and peace. She always told me, “If you want to see change, you have to create it.” That message stayed with me. So, with that inspiration, I decided to act.

My first step was starting small peacebuilding initiatives in my community. I gathered young people—mostly girls—who, like me, were tired of living in fear. We began organizing peace dialogues, bringing together different groups who had long been divided by conflict. It was difficult at first; the scars of the past ran deep, and many were reluctant to join. But slowly, through conversations, storytelling, and a shared desire for a better future, we began to build bridges.

One of the most powerful moments came during a session where a group of girls shared their experiences of being denied education and basic rights because of the instability in the region. Their stories were heartbreaking but filled with hope and resilience. It was in that moment I realized that peace and girl empowerment go hand in hand. Without peace, girls can never truly thrive, and without empowered girls, communities cannot achieve lasting peace.

Inspired by their courage, I launched a project called "Girls for Peace". This initiative focuses on both promoting peace and empowering young girls through education and leadership training. We partnered with local schools to provide girls with access to education, while also teaching them conflict resolution skills and fostering their self-confidence. Our goal was not only to prepare them for academic success but also to equip them to become future leaders in peacebuilding.

The journey has not been easy. We’ve faced resistance from traditional structures that have long devalued the role of women and girls. But I’ve seen incredible transformations. I’ve seen girls, once silenced, standing up and speaking out against violence, leading peace talks in their neighborhoods, and mentoring other young girls to believe in their worth and potential. I’ve seen communities that were once divided by hatred begin to heal because of the relentless efforts of these young leaders.

One particular success story that always brings me hope is that of Amina, a 15-year-old girl who used to skip school due to fear of violence. After joining our program, she not only returned to school but became one of the strongest voices advocating for peace in her community. Today, she mentors younger girls, teaching them how to be change-makers, just like she has become.

Through this work, I have learned that true peace is not just the absence of conflict. It is the presence of opportunity, equality, and empowerment, especially for girls. By empowering girls, we are not just changing their lives—we are shaping the future of entire communities. These girls hold the potential to be peacemakers, educators, and leaders who can guide us toward a more just and peaceful world.

This is why I am committed to continuing the work of "Girls for Peace", no matter the obstacles. And this is why I believe that, as we approach the International Day of Peace and the International Day of the Girl Child, it is more important than ever to amplify the stories of those working tirelessly for peace and the empowerment of girls.

Because every girl deserves to live in a world where she can pursue her dreams without fear. Every community deserves to experience the peace that comes when girls are allowed to shine.

I share this story not only to highlight the work being done but to encourage others to take action. Whether it’s through education, mentorship, or simply providing a safe space for girls to grow, we all have the power to promote peace and empower the next generation of leaders.

Let us continue to build bridges, foster understanding, and create a world where every girl can thrive in peace. Together, we can light the path forward.
