Marching in Spirit from Somalia #WomensMarch

I believe women should unite worldwide. I believe that we have to seek and find the change we want, the change we need. It is our moment to come together as women – not just in the U.S. but all around the world – to rise up for the change we envision collectively. Thank you to all the women who are taking part in the #WomensMarch in the U.S. but also to all the sisters who are standing up with them, from near and far, for our fundamental human rights today in Washington D.C..

Over here in Somalia, this week it was brought to our attention that twoSomali girls were raped, stabbed, tortured, dehumanized, sexually molested, stoned at, spit on by 6 young boys who laughingly took pictures and videos of them in action. The footage was put on Social Media and caused outrage among Somalis worldwide. Somali women and men took to Social Media to express their frustrations, grief and solidarity with the girls. I created the Hashtag #PublicOutrage to express my personal views, solidarity, anger and analyses of this particular rape and of sexual and gender based violence in general in Somaliaand many other women and men did the same.

We need to be askingwhy and how it is possible for 6 Somali boys to rape andtorture 2Somali girls & think they can get away with it. We need to look within our society for answers. We need to be asking the right questions. Somali women beyond the U.S borders are today showing their solidarity with the women in the US because they are against violence against women andgirls in any form and any part of the universe.#PublicOutrage
