Reconstructing Haiti: Women at the Center

May 4, 2010 | New York, NY

Headliners:
Alice Backer, Taina BienAimé, Nancy Dorsinville

Where are women’s voices in Haiti reconstruction? Concerned activists are sounding an appeal for women’s leadership to drive Haiti earthquake recovery. These efforts are backed by the recently released Gender Shadow Report, authored by a coalition of humanitarian and women’s advocacy organizations, including PotoFanm+Fi, a World Pulse-sponsored initiative. The report highlights the urgency of listening to women and supporting women’s leadership during disaster recovery.

So where are Haiti’s women? Since the earthquake hit in January, they have been organizing and advocating for a greater say in their country’s recovery, garnering international allies, and supporting each other as their efforts have quietly gained steam.

The Reconstructing Haiti event, to be held in New York on May 4th, presents an unprecedented opportunity to learn from the ongoing reconstruction efforts in Haiti, to adjust policies to reflect women’s perspectives, and to create new models of disaster recovery. The evening will feature lawyer and blogger Alice Backer; executive director of Equality Now Taina BienAimé; and Nancy Dorsinville, senior policy advisor from the UN Office of the Special Envoy to Haiti.

This event is hosted by Poto Fanm+Fi, the New York Women’s Foundation, the Haitian Roundtable, Equality Now, and BelTiFi.
