Me and My Guntur Medical College August 15 , 1952

By Dr.Balakrishna M. Ramaraju

My First day at Guntur Medical College - 15 August 1952 : got up early morn even before sun is up on the eastern horizon , fast broken with rice and pickle , dressed up in a white trousers and a white shirt , new shoes and me 17 plus was one of the early birds to be within Medical College Grounds by 7 am IST . Soon the Principal Dr D J Reddy , accompanied by Dr Sarah J Showri Profesor of Anatomy , Dr C Seetharamayya Professor of Physiology , Dr Varghese Professor of Biochemistry , MR Sreeraamasarma Professor of Organic Chemistry , and other Staff Members Drs Ganeshan , Simhaadri , Physical Director Baaburao , all assembled In Front of Flag Pole , and we students 50 freshers and our seniors assembled behind staff members , freshers behind seniors - protocol needs to be observed . In those days I was very excited about Independence Day - gradually over the years and decades the enthusiasm has waned . Whatever it may be on that day 15th August 1952 I was very excited and stood at attention as our Guntur Medical College Principal Dr D J Reddy gaaru hoisted Indian national Tricolor and I saluted shouting ' Jai Hind ' and sang ' Jana Gana Mana ' boisterously . Later sweets were distributed and we freshers were introduced to Principal , Professors , and other Staff Members - Principal exhorted us to be good students and bring credit to ourselves , our families , our Guntur Medical College , Our Madras Presidency and Our India , which I silently endorsed and vowed to follow to the letter , which I did throughout my life to the best of my ability . Now the time has come to be ragged by our Seniors and I was thrown into a shallow pond - lo and behold my white dress , my new shoes all became wet and me soggy , embarrassed and made fun of which I bore with equanimity and all of us juniors were accepted with warmth and thus came to a close my first day at Guntur Medical College where my stay which will last for two years - more of it at a later stage - I have to go home , get out of my wet clothes , have a bath at our well in the back yard , have to eat something you know I am hungry now all that excitement died down - so friends give me a break !
