My journey

Am happy today I can celebrate my freedom of speech. Am also celebrating how I am able to share my personal stories without fear or discrimination and the beauty of knowing that I am changing someone out there that is going through rough times or passing through the same road I used long time ago.

Pulse provided me with the best platform that I needed and where women could share and encourage one another and building each other’s strength.

Not long ago when I was going through trouble, I did not know who to share with because there was the probability of being laughed at or being discriminated against. Lots of people I got in contact with did not seem to care and everyone seemed to hide their problems and if they shared, 90% would be fiction and only 10 % would be true.

Well the big issue here was how someone who was lost with no clue of finding a solution to the many challenges would get emotional support. There was nowhere to vent out your frustrations or to celebrate your successes.

October this year a friend posted a journal she had written through world pulse and she shared with us. Upon reading it I got motivated to also try.

My first story was about surviving civil unrest. In my story I shared my loss, pain and the shame and finally celebrated my success in achieving the education that I needed so much to get me out of poverty.

My second story was about the retrogressive cultures in my community that is killing the future of our girls. Female Genital Mutilation has stolen the rights of many bright girls and has destroyed their future through deaths, discrimination spread of diseases and increased poverty.

In my two stories world pulse recognized my efforts and supported my stories for publishing by New York Times.

Through their support, I have been able to reach out to many organizations that work with disadvantaged communities. Majority of these organizations had never heard about the Ogiek community living in Kenya.

The story telling technique employed by World pulse has enabled the healing process of the many broken hearted women who initially had nowhere to turn to.

The journey I started with world pulse has helped me gain public speaking skills and the ability to effectively work on my projects back in my village. The journey has also earned me several recognitions: being the vocal and active community member.

I truly appreciate how far I have come and the support I have received form the world pulse community including financial support (prizes)
