My Voice, My Weapon

Ever since I was a child, my passion for gender and cultural issues has been very elaborate to everyone that I have engaged with. I have always wanted to know why most global communities have varying treatment between men and women. More often than not, I have had to shed a tear or two when I read, or hear a story about a girl or woman who has been inhumanely treated. It is this hunger for information on women and their issues that unexpectedly availed me an opportunity to know about World Pulse.

World Pulse being an action media network that connects women’s voices that is aimed at transforming our world, I do not regret being part of it at all. I feel very motivated by its dedication to listen to, as well as broadcast, the unheard voices and innovative solutions of women worldwide. When I learnt about this community through Google (a search engine), I was looking for information on women in India and the USA. It was a great opportunity for me to learn about it in good time that I was able to apply for the Voices of Our Future 2013.

Being a global network that partners with over 40 top international organizations that are empowering women every day, I am confident of using World Pulse to give voiceless women a chance to define themselves. It is very encouraging to realize that with World Pulse, the voices of its network are reaching millions of people worldwide.

I have engaged with women at all levels of community and I realize that their issues vary. I never thought there could be a platform that cuts across all social classes and cultures of these women without discrimination. Most of the stories written and broadcast about women, unfortunately, have been about their poverty and suffering. A woman has traditionally been given the face of tears and pain.

With Web 2.0, I believe women like me are going to change this belief. I will walk to that cyber café and write my feminine story to share with the world. I will use my mobile phone in the kitchen, while my rice simmers on the fire, to tell the world that even in the kitchen that it wants us to be confined, we can have a voice. I will multitask on the office desktop to share a story of a girl in my village who has passed the national exams exceptionally well. On that flight from some remote area on my way from covering a story on women entrepreneurship groups I will illustrate the situation on my journal right there on my laptop before the plane lands.

I will shout for the women with my voice and fingers until our community networks are strengthened, our environments are comfortable to live in, and we feel satisfactorily democratic. CNN, the Huffington Post, the UN, and the U.S. Department of State, I intend to be part of your family soon as a result of my ‘voice’.
