Name Meanings-Part 2

Everything-living and non living has a name. If something has no name, it is yet to be discovered, invented or created as far as I know.

So why do we call people and things a particular name? Why is a computer, a book, a pen called that and not something else? Do their meanings and their history ortheir function contribute to what they are named? What about human beings? Why did our parents ever give us thenames we are called?
What do these names mean and how do they affect us consciously and unconsciously? I have been curious for sometime now and that led me to post to the group name meanings some weeks ago.

I was thrilled to know the meaning of names of our sisters on this community:Many thanks to all those who shared the meaning and history behind their names:

Jennifer Ann- ‘Fair one of favored grace”

Katie Anna McDonald -“Pure, Grace, World Ruler”

Busayo “God has added to our joy

Khushbu is of Urdu origin and it means "beautiful fragrance"

Nusrat is “success/ victory”

Sunita: Su means shuva in Nepali which means fortune in english and early morning in Bangla.
Basnet: Bas means to Basnu in Nepali which mean to sit.
Together my name Sunita Basnet means to have fortune forever which also apply in my life. It helps to bring happiness and peace in life.

"Janice" is a variant of "Jane", an English girl's name meaning "God's gracious gift". My last name "Wong" is an ancient (and now extremely common) surname and the variation my family use represents descendants of the Yellow Emperor”

A quick survey on this community has also shown that most people never had the opportunity to choose their own names which may be normal in most cases. However, people can have the opportunity to choose their names as babies! A community member shared her story:

“My name is Reem it's spelled in different ways (Reem/Riem/Ream/Rym ) It means female deer. I actually picked my own name. My mum liked the names Reem and Rana and my dad liked Hend, they wrote them down on small pieces of papers and I touched the "Reem" paper 3 times in a row with my little hand. They figured, I just like the name Reem!”

Reem, you have generous parents! I grew up to hear the sound Gifty from the lips of my entourage. My grand parents called me “Agifiti”, (according to Linguistics, people from my village will always add an "A" to all names. so for instance if you are called Jennifer, they will call you "Ajennifer". Toddlers learning how to talk called me “Titi” but it is supposed to sound and mean the same thing. I am yet to find out if my Dad consulted my mother before naming me. With my background, men made major decisions. Howver, with education and womne's rights advocacy this tradition is changing.

“Gifty, even you need to mention the meaning of your name…” Khushbu made it clear:

Gifty means”Gift of God”. Pearl means “Precious, valuable”. Together my name Gifty Pearl Means “Precious gift from God”. I believe I am the greatest gift to Humanity so I live every day working to touch people’s lives in my own small unique way.

So here we are from different places with different names and meanings but with one goal: seeking, researching, telling and reporting global issues from the perspective of the woman.
But there is also this question lurking in my mind. Why WOLDPULSE or Pulsewire? What do these names mean? What is their history? What is the story behind the name “Voices of Our Future?” Are our voices not in the present as well? Forgive me for being too curious.

Lets keep learning and sharing.
