Reducing the prevalence of Cervical Cancer in Delta State, Nigeria



Today, 4th February is World Cancer Day. Working Fingers Int'l Initiative Commenced a Six months project on reducing the prevalence of cervical in Delta State using Ika South as a Pilot LGA. Fifty girls are expected to be direct beneficiaries while 5,000 community members will be indirect benigiciaries. This project is expected to be adopted by the wife of the Ika LGA Chairman, Mrs Tatabuzogwu Tessy. At an Advocacy visit to the Ika Chairman , Hon Tatabuzogwu in his office at the Ika Local Government Area Secretariat, Agbor, he expressed consern at the alarming rate of death recorded to Cancer in recent times. He assured the WoFII/Ika South LGA Council Cervical Cancer Prevention/Awareness Team of his full support so long as the project is to save the lives of his people. The Project Management Team is let by Dr Adaeze, Speaking during the visit, Comr. Dr. Eris Jewo-Ibi, Executive Director, Working Fingers Int'l Initiative/Association Against Child Sexual and Gender Based Violence, looked forward to getting more partners and funders for this laudable project. She shared how she lost a very dear friend, to cervical cancer. Comr. Eris appeal to wealthy Deltans to support women's health and rights project like this WoFII/Ika South Reduce Prevalence of Cervical Project. This project is aimed to create awareness on cervical cancer, produce and share correct information on cancer prevention, provision of screening and detection services, provide Vaccine for girls age 9-13 that have not been exposed to sexual intercourse and continuous follow upon identified cases in the community. The project team include the supervisory counsellor for health, the Local immunization Officer of the council, and other Stakeholders. The Working Fingers Int'l Initiative Governing Council Board Chairperson, Prof Josephine Aluminum appreciated profoundly the Ika South LGA Chairman for his promises to support this laudable project that will save the lives of our girls from getting infected with the Cancer virus.



I am excited to share this story because to get the government buy in into your pet project is not very easy considering the lean resources available at the council.



We had planning meetings and one advocacy visit.
