The Female Condom-more than a condom!

Every woman has her own story about the female condom whether she has used it or not. For a long time, both men and women depended on the male condom until the introduction of what is known as the female condom. Here in Cameroon, enough sensitization is being done to get more women protected against STDs and to complement already existing family planning programming .(Infact the common type here is sold and distributed under the brand name 'Protectiv'). In the urban and rural areas women are being schooled on its use and advised to carry them in their bags to the farm, work, market, party and just wherever.

Listening to some friends chat about how comfortable they are with this barrier device, gives me the impression that this relatively new contraceptive is still to win their hearts.
They worry over the fact that they have to actually hold the condom all through intercourse, something they find not quite comfortable. Others are still to come to terms with its physical attributes. What i think is that there is the need for attitude change. Very few women out here actually buy condoms. The silence; little or no talk about issues considered intimate like sex and condom-use amoung girls and women.

Hey, and before i rest my fingers, take this, a man worried in one of our chats that 'finally women can secretly get pregnant for men after a few tricks with the used female condom'! Don't ask me what she needs to do with the used condom.
