THE JOURNEY TO SELF DISCOVERY

My journey to being heard is one that has led me to a number of intersections and highways that sometime looked confusing to me. There were times I wondered all night if my dreams of bringing the struggles of women in my part of the world to the fore will ever come true.
In 2005, a year after I joined Radio Nigeria, I started a programme “Lean on Me” dealing with issues regarding the family as a unit making up the society. I realised that strong families with values build great nations and in the course of the programme I found out that most of the issues that came up all related with the woman so I started to zero in on WOMEN.
A lot of issues were talked about from adultery, prostitution, rejection the quest for freedom from “bondage”(some called their marriages that) and Self Doubts were discussed and the women had so much to talk about. In all of these I felt the pain of some of the women who contributed because I remember times when I was told I couldn’t do somethings because someone else who was not in my shoes felt that way.
When I moved on to my present job Radio/TV Continental, “Woman of Substance” started and the idea was to locate that substance in every woman and help use their experiences to encourage other women who had relative concerns. Women health became an issue for me because I also realized that when you talk about diseases, the woman is at a disadvantage and because of her body makeup it can do a lot of damage to her system so I got saddled with the responsibility of bringing these women together with health professionals to tackle their health issues and concerns.
I also looked at young girls and realized that some of them lacked role models, they have no one to talk with which may be one of the reasons they stepped out of line in their lives and career so I simply took up that challenge to speak with young girls in secondary schools about sexuality issues. The gatherings have really helped some of them to discover themselves.
I needed a platform to represent what I do with women and girls and it led me to designing a website www.g2wi.com so that women around the world can identify with what I do but I was on the internet one fateful day checking out women interactive sites and I stumbled on WorldPulse, I looked around the site and found out it was just what I have always desired, where I can read stories about and from other women, share interests and opinions with them so I just logged on and registered. I think World Pulse will help project my ideas and give me a picture of what it is with other women from around the world.
