Time to take more than what is given to us.

Growing up in Sierra Leone as a girl I realized that there are no structures provided for women and girl to thrive. All what men do is open up some space that we can manage. I remembered going through my notes few minutes before going to take an exam final year in Secondary School and one of the boys whom I was in the same class with confronted me and told me that I am just wasting time going through all the strain to pass an exam, when I know that women are considered to make little or no decision. I was really pissed by his statement, and from that moment I swear not to play safe, but to make myself prominent in any thing I embark on.

I really hope more women and girls will make a commitment to thrive in midst of all the gender issues we are faced with. Let us don't depend on the empty promises authorities in power give on International Women's Day and every other day. Let’s build the life we want and create a conducive community we want our daughters to live in. A community that is free from underrepresented women in politics, unequal pay, little or no educational opportunities, higher poverty, stereotypes, oversexualizing, rape and domestic violence.

Presently am working a project with a colleague I went to Indiana university with to training girls in Sierra Leone and Nigeria on how to be better spokesperson for their community, how use digital skills to help the courses they are passionate about and a short film to raise awareness on low self-esteem and why girls must speak up. This project is in honor of the struggle I went through and I hope that the impact will make other girl stand up and fight against all the odds. Although we are still challenged with getting funding's to execute all our plans, am still hopeful that we will thrive amidst all the challenges.

There are days I feel like I can't make it to the next day because I am overwhelmed with problems I can't solve and these are the days I lean on other women for support. One thing I have learnt lately is to never give in to the things that constantly weighs me down. My fellow women don't forget that it’s never too late to change what you don't like or to start that new initiative. If no one motivates you, be motivated by yourself.  There will be times when people will question your real value don't be afraid to show them what you stand for and what you are made of. Let’s join our voice together and speak up for the things we believe in. My regards to all women who from dawn to dust makes the world a less dangerous place to live in.
