Gender Based Violence ( GBV) often inflicted by relatives and known people. That's what happened to Ms. Sundari in India. Being the eldest among five children, sundari s parents married her to a drunken men at the age of 16 in 1950'S. Soon she became mother of three girls. Sundari s husband drink and violate her for not giving birth to son and torture her in many ways. Violence being a taboo topic, and fearing blame or stigmatization, Sundari rarely reported the incident. With no support from her own parents and relatives, Sundari suffered violation for many years till her husbands death.
Women oppression was in question in all eras of Indian history since ancient days till today, before her birth, after her birth and till her death. The ancient era vanished, it's tradition of women oppression should also vanish. In present era even though there are many laws governing women but still there is a lack in its implementation. In present days women has to equip herself with new means to under the society in a more better way and try not to oppress based on gender discrimination.
GBV, the most pervasive violation, is neither natural, nor inevitable and must be prevented.
Here are some ways to prevent GBV:
1. Provide Women and girls with safe spaces, keep them in school, and empower them economically.
2. Support local women- led and women's right organization.
3. Start conversation about general roles early on, and challenge traditional gender characteristics.
4. Faith based and traditional figures can play pivotal role in violence prevention.
5. Engage Male allies and include women in decision making at Leadership level.
