Story
The sociopolitical crisis in the two Anglophone regions of Cameroon has had a lot of adverse effects on everyone in the North and South West Regions. Persons with disabilities especially women have suffered more . Worst still women with hearing impairment have suffered even more because of their inability to communicate. The past year Association for the empowerment of the deaf and Vulnerable persons (AEDVP) has been greatly involved in equipping deaf and Vulnerable girls and women with skills and start up capital to improve on their livelihood. Sometimes we meet situations on the field that force us to think out of the box and be intentional about our interventions.
We were delighted to meet with glory and husband Ngwa. Glory is a girl living with hearing impairment. She is married to Ngwa who is physically challenged. They both lived in Bafut one of the villages most affected by the sociopolitical Crisis in the North West Region. They were forced to abandon their home and their Barber/hair dresser shop as their neighborhood experienced constant cross fire between non state arm groups and the state security agents. As internally displaced persons they could barely afford a meal a day and most of the time had to depend on Good will from people living in the same neighborhood. AEDVP supported them from time to time with some food stuff. Glory became pregnant still living under these conditions. We thought it was time to think out of the box because life would become more difficult when the baby comes. My organisation decided we would empower Glory's husband, Ngwa. We bought barbing equipments for him to set up a barber shop since he had already acquired skills in that. Our idea was to indirectly empower Glory. It was a difficult decision to take but am so happy we did. There is so much hope now that life will become better for them.
