The only girl in a family of seven said the unusual assembly bell on Tuesday morning made her shed tears when she thought of the environment at home

The 14-year-old girl who stunned Kenyans when she was featured shedding tears for being sent home following the teachers’ strike on Wednesday explained the reason for her distress.

“I have no conducive environment to study at home,” said Pauline Atieno, a pupil at Amani Primary School in Mombasa.

The only girl in a family of seven said the unusual assembly bell on Tuesday morning made her shed tears when she thought of the environment at home.

“I’m the only girl at home and whenever I plan to study there is a lot of interruption from my younger brother and cousin. Apart from that, the support I get from Amani Primary is great,” said Atieno.

Speaking from the family home at Ganahola in Mikindani, the Standard Seven pupil said she felt her older brother, a Form Four candidate, was too busy to help her with her homework.

Some people had this to say about the whole scenario....teachers strike, and the response of the 14 year old Pauline Atieno;

A:This girl represents millions of other hustlers' children. I wonder whether the Chief (or is it former) Hustler is seeing or reading this!

Other than the teachers' plight, there are other issues of space, conditions of the facilities and books among others which need urgent attention in many areas. I am surprised those in authority are still adamant on prioritizing laptops for class one. I pray and hope that it has nothing to do with the expected profits for the Kenyan agent of the laptops - otherwise later to be known as "Jubilee Lapberg" or Lapleasing"!

B:I know what she is talking and crying about. I bless her tears but that does not help. A crisis that touches education in a country must be given priority. School for the poor means more than the rich (politicians) think. Give priority to this and forget about the laptops. Teachers must be in school.
