History of International Women’s Day
The origins of International Women's Day date back to the early 1900s when women campaigned for safer working conditions, better pay, and the right to vote in New York City. This movement spread to Europe, where Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland observed the first official International Women’s Day in 1911. The United Nations proclaimed March 8 as an official UN holiday in 1977. Women around the world have since stood up for their right to celebrate the holiday, from Iran to Kyrgyzstan. On World Pulse, we provide a safe space for members to celebrate women's rights and achievements every day of the year.
How to Celebrate International Women’s Day
Many countries around the world celebrate International Women’s Day, recognizing women’s achievements and rallying to support women's rights. Here on World Pulse, you can share stories, collaborate for change, encourage members, and find inspiration on International Women’s Day — and every day.
Why Celebrate International Women’s Day?
We celebrate International Women’s Day to recognize women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements everywhere. It is also a day that pushes women’s equality to the forefront. With only 63 percent of women using the Internet in 2022 compared to 69 percent of men, this year’s International Women’s Day focuses on innovation and technology for gender equality. At World Pulse, we harness the power of technology to accelerate women's leadership and speed up the pace towards gender equity.
